As someone grew up outside of the US, learning how K-12 education works in America was a journey I embarked on when my oldest child was turning five. I noticed early on that “good schools” often implied suburban schools with majority white student populations. I chose to send my children to an urban public school, and work for the same district to improve educational opportunities for all children to succeed regardless of their race, socioeconomic background, or ability status in the community that I have called home since 2003.
