Michael Spencer

Michael T. Spencer is a third-generation Washingtonian with deep roots in D.C.’s East of the River neighborhoods, namely Historic Anacostia and Hillcrest. He currently serves as the Chairman of D.C.’s Rental Housing Commission. Appointed to that role by Mayor Bowser, Michael is responsible for leading the independent, full-time commission’s enforcement of D.C.’s rent control laws.

Michael is a founding board member of Digital Pioneers Academy and Rocketship Public School’s DC Network. He is also a member of Leadership Greater Washington (2012), CityBridge Education’s Book Club, and Kappa Alpha Psi. Michael has previously held leadership roles with For Love of Children, Youth Leadership Greater Washington, and the American Red Cross.

A product of D.C. Public Schools, Michael holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Ohio University, where he was nominated for a Rhodes Scholarship. Michael also holds a law degree from The Ohio State University. Michael is married to Justin Stephens, an education coach at Flamboyan Foundation.
