Candace Smith
Candace Smith’s career has been rooted in the DC education sector, first as a teacher and now as the Executive Director of Urban Teachers’ DC program. Prior to stepping into the role of ED, she was the inaugural DC Assistant Director for six years and played an integral role in expanding the impact of the program, significantly growing the incoming cohort, as well as the number of school partnerships. Prior to joining Urban Teachers, Candace was an early childhood educator. Over her five years with Friendship Public Charter School’s Chamberlain campus, she taught kindergarten, was a grade-level team leader, held an active role on the instructional leadership team, and was a host teacher for Urban Teachers, where she first observed the growth potential for educators in a rigorous residency model. Candace earned a B.A. from the University of Chicago and her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from American University. She lives in Washington, DC with her husband, Henry, 4-year old daughter, Caroline, and dog, Lola.
