Adults try to teach children the importance of kindness, but we often fail to model it in our actions. True kindness is not rooted in comfort, pleasantries, or niceness but in equity and justice. Our world is decidedly unkind today, with individuals systematically targeted for their appearances and identities. I am drawn to racial equity and social justice work because we urgently need to repair the harm this is doing to our society. That healing begins with examining myself, reckoning with the ways I uphold inequitable systems, and committing myself to rebuilding a better, kinder world.
